BIO
A Pacific Northwest Native, Steven earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Oregon and a Master of Landscape Architecture degree at the University of Pennsylvania. He has lectured and taught design and planning studio courses at the University of Oregon and at the University of Idaho’s summer program in Cremelino, Italy. Steven has expertise in landscape design, programming and leading community consensus workshops through years of working with Lawrence Halprin, a pioneer in the field. Steven has also assisted and worked with other noted landscape architects and planners such as the late Ian McHarg and the design firms of Murase Associates and Mayer/Reed.
In 2000, after years of professional construction, design and management experience,Steven established Koch Landscape Architecture. He has since become an integral part of Oregon’s design community. Urban design and open space planning challenges are met with great energy and innovation to develop solutions aimed at improving the urban landscape experience. Steven’s thoughtful enthusiasm for the integration of art and technology into public and private life has resulted in the completion of many intriguing projects. Steven enjoys working with architects, developers and public municipalities to define and resolve social, ecological, planning and design issues.
Steven’s knowledge of traditional landscape design and forms supports his reputation for sensitively designing private and public gardens that are integral with historic architecture, period homes and unique challenging sites.
Steven is a Fellow and full member of the American Society of Landscape Architects and holds professional licenses in Oregon (#310), California (#3955), Washington (#907) and Idaho (#287).
