Urban gardens have many shapes, sizes and forms. This 650 square foot terrace garden is on the 14th floor of an exclusive condominium project designed by GBD Architects in Portland’s Brewery Blocks Redevelopment District. The panoramic views and lush foreground of distinctive plant types invite the residents to use the terrace daily.

Solar aspect, wind, and extreme seasonal temperatures are some of the design constraints and opportunities encountered in terrace design. Sean Hogan from Cistus Nursery helped choose plant materials that will thrive in these extreme climatic conditions.

KLA designed the terrace and the custom planters to address the issues of weight limits, soil types, irrigation and lighting.
