The dramatic geologic formations of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area provide a powerful backdrop for a seasonal home complete with detached guest suites.  Koch Landscape Architecture is collaborating with Krannitz Gehl Architects, providing the skillful integration of the architecture into a restored and enhanced ecological system.

The design of the home is interwoven with the design of the landscape. Together they address the challenges of intense wind, sun and cold. The site, sloping 30 feet to the river’s edge provided the opportunity to choreograph cascading waterfalls and pools. The water course is the design element that binds the various guest suite terraces, bocce ball court and entertaining patios together.

World class wind surfing is staged at the river’s edge. The board storage structure will disappear under the cloak of a green roof.

Natural stone, strategically place trees for wind breaks and native plantings appropriate for the climatic extremes of the region subtly separate use areas in an overall poetic response to the surrounding landscape.
