The Jeffery is a State and Federal supported affordable housing project in the Cultural District of downtown Portland. The project adds to the growing number of affordable housing opportunities which are critical to maintain diversity in the city’s burgeoning redevelopment areas.KLA is the landscape architect for the project’s tranquil inner courtyard. It will provide the residents with a quiet area to retreat and enjoy.
The courtyard’s highlights include a creative ecological stormwater conveyance system. Spiraling downspouts guide water into large ceramic basins. From the basins the water enters a non traditional flow thru planter that detains and treats the stormwater.
Seating areas under broad overhanging eaves and comfortable benches shaded by trees allow residents to be spectators to the playful conveyance and treatment of the water gathered from the entire roof of their new home.
